(also, I haven't heard back on the status of the move yet, so I haven't done anything.)

News and Announcements / Theme Change

The frozen theme seems to be inexplicably broken in a way that prevents logins and posts, so I have set everyone's default theme to this, which seems to work fine.

News and Announcements / Server Move
« on: April 26, 2019 (05:26 PM) »
I'm not sure exactly when yet, but in the coming weeks, I will be moving DDF over to the same server that The Shining Evolution is hosted on, where some gracious folks have hosted me for free with pretty much zero downtime.

There may be some server errors and downtime when I begin, and the forums will be briefly shut down. I will post in this thread when I begin and end. After I am done you can resume posting and doing whatever else you like; it will be situation normal.

This will likely be the last time I fiddle with DDF. By this I mean if your web browser (Chrome, because you're terrible) makes DDF stop working, I will likely not fix it. This is probably only a few years away, if only because of the retarded warnings over HTTS that are set to become increasingly strict. It also means that if something happens with the hosting (judging by their current fantastic and generous record: unlikely) I will not do anything about it, with the caveat below.

Concomitant with the server move, I will be de-sensitizing the current and former forum databases and providing them for download. What I mean by that is I will drop all the private message tables and remove all the non-username profile information, such as emails, password hashes, IM contact information, etc., and provide the databases as a text data dump. This will allow you to have a backup copy of all forum posts and threads if you are for some reason interested in reading DDF shenanigans in 2040. To reiterate, all sensitive and personally identifiable information and private messages will be removed from this download. If you have an interest in reading old PMs, save them yourself or send me a PM and find a way to motivate me to make a special download that includes your PMs. Note: if you want me to do this, I will be unavoidably reading some of your PMs to make sure I did it right. If you are not requesting this, don't worry: it's probably a huge pain to read your PMs and I'm not going to bother.

You could also, if you chose, use this database dump to host a mirror of DDF, but nobody would be able to log in since their emails and passwords would be blanked. (In case you're very startled right now, the database stores a hash of your password, not your actual password. I cannot see your password.)

Caveating what I said above, if something does happen with the hosting, I will set it so that brings you to an otherwise blank webpage with download links for the desensitized database downloads. I have a very small and cheap VPS that will serve sufficiently for that purpose I use as a VPN.

It's been rad.

For some reason this forum name popped into my head and I decided to spend my Saturday night posting here. Hi again, everyone. To all of you who finished your schooling, many congratulations.

I don't even remember the last time I posted, so here's the abridged version of the past six years or so:

When I joined this forum, I was living in MN and pursuing a doctorate in physical therapy. Somewhere during first year, I realized it wasn't a good fit and had an inkling that medicine was the right career. Around 2012 or so, I started to shadow a few physicians, which confirmed that yes, it was a better fit. After disappearing from the face of TDD, I wound up leaving the PT program (it was not a rash decision and a lot of factors went into it, including a hospitalization that resulted in an extended absence from the program) and starting the pre-med journey almost from scratch. I applied once in 2013 and was unsuccessful (waitlisted at one place and never got off), so I retook the MCAT, took a bunch of higher-level molecular bio courses, worked at a public health clinic in Nicaragua, worked as a medical scribe, and dabbled in public speaking (not necessarily in order). The second time I applied, I received eight interview invites and ultimately matriculated into medical school.

Fast forward to today-- I currently live in VA. I'm more or less content with med school. Being a physician is a much better fit, and although the few gunners have soured the experience and a family member recently had a cancer scare (negative), I'm much happier. Although I started out interested in OB/GYN, my interests have shifted toward dermatology. At the risk of sounding like a gunner myself, I have the grades for derm, but definitely need a couple of research publications to be considered competitive.

Anyway just checking in... I wish you all the best and am glad that many of you already seem to be in a good place. :)

Does this mean you have some good advice for my probable rotator cuff injury that's because harassing me for months and stopping progress on my bench? (OHP fine tho)

News and Announcements / Re: Discord
« on: June 13, 2018 (03:52 PM) »
Sometimes quick-dying fads are good for picking up popularity back again before bringing new users back to a home-base like the cgiirc chat or even back to the forum. We've all been seeing the dismal state of the forum for some time while WtW thrives. What is wrong with the fly by night tactic to get people back?

The CEO of the company that makes Discord previously got busted for installing spyware on people's phones and selling the data. I see no reason to believe they've changed, since Discord has doxxed people responsible for crimethink on their platform and made them targets of harassment. I don't feel any need to endorse this behavior. Remember: Discord is a centralized system. Everything you type on Discord goes through their servers. The bandwidth and computational load is immense. It's free. You're the product.

More to the point, you're missing the reason why the forum activity has dwindled. The loss of the domain name was a tremendous blow, and the reboot was a terrible idea. I was in a bad place at the time and wanted to step back and let other people try their hand at running things, and it was a mistake. I should have put my foot down and let come whatever came of it. I should have also been more choosy about who I made staff - in retrospect, I don't think Anthy or KD were well suited to it as, for example, Enaz was/is. But most importantly, this would have happened anyway, it just would have been less of a sharp drop off.

Ask yourself what the difference is between WtW and DDF. DDF has, for many years now, been about the community. We all knew and cared (more or less) for each other. Digimon was really a secondary concern for a lot of people. After DDF's initial growth, during its glory days, there actually weren't that many new people joining and staying for any considerable length of time - they were often mistreated and treated like outcasts for being (relative) outsiders. Sommelier is a great example. He has tried very hard to keep things going around here for years with his posting activity, and he made a very generous donation to keep the forum running - but he was always treated pretty badly by many because he wasn't one of the Inner Circle. The positive aspect to all this is what we were all mostly good friends, had a lot of fun, and had a lot of intensely personal conversations.

But people grow up and move on.

When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.

I keep things running mostly so people can check in now and then, and maybe visit and see their old posts when they have a fit of nostalgia. I have been thinking about an appropriate way, and time, to sunset DDF. I'm a great example of this, though. I have a family, a house, a job, I go to the gym, I have a social life and hobbies that have nothing to do with Digimon. To be honest, I haven't cared very much for Digimon in a long time. I have wanted to care very much, sometimes; that's why I spent so much time on the revamp of the site and encyclopedia and then abandoned it. I was, and am, here for you, not for Digimon. And I think this is true for most people on DDF: Digimon was really a secondary concern, something that served only really as the absolute minimum baseline of what we have in common. We have, exceptionally for a Digimon forum, had an abnormally large proportion of good-looking well-adjusted people. Nobody else had anybody nearly as great as Ryo or Foz.

I feel like this is true for you too, Myo. If you were really that worried about our activity levels, you would be spending more than ten minutes every month in the chatroom.

WtW, on the other hand, is a very...different situation. It is centered entirely around Digimon. People bankroll the site, and the admin spends his own money from...whatever sources, I don't think he's employed, to buy and tear down every single piece of Digimon merchandise and media that is released. Tweets are BREAKING NEWS. There are long discussions about the sexuality of fictional preteen children. Digimon is neither particularly good, or particularly bad, for what it is - a Japanese cartoon engineered to sell merchandise. But if you're a grown adult and obsessed with buying worthless junk because it's part of a fictional franchise, well, that just feels a little wrong to me, like you're missing a soul and have instead become sort of bug-man that thrives only on empty consumerism. Even if you're just spending every day engaged in a lot of thought about it, I think something is probably wrong. I think this is reflected in the fact that the members there are notoriously thin-skinned and bitchy if they aren't totally autistic spergs. Also note most of the activity and discussion is actual Digimon-related. It has been an ongoing joke for 12 years that we never talked about Digimon in the DDF chat.

I have no interest in becoming that. I don't want "40 year Digimon forum administrator" in my obituary and I don't want to spend the little time I have on this earth thinking 24/7 about some Japanese company's artless merchandise-driven fiction. There are other things I want to do and be remembered for.

Sure, it'd be nice if the glory days were back again. I would appreciate it if old friends came back and posted more or participated in the chat. I don't think having a Discord is going to make a substantial difference there, and that's what would really matter to me, not getting new users I don't know. There was a time when that mattered, but that time is past. Even if it worked, we would become something else, not the DDF we know and love.

Have a song.

News and Announcements / Discord

[22:15] <Myo> @Shining_Celebi Does DDF have a discord? I feel like that's becoming the chat future.

No, and it never will. Discord is another fly-by-night centralized chat operation. Here today, gone tomorrow. Also, the company that owns them does tons of evil creepy spying.

Also, it's built on Electron, ffs.

Echoing what Enaz said. Shame we didn't overlap by a shorter amount of time. Might have actually had a conversation going here.

I graduated with an English degree in July. I moved to London a couple of months ago, and I'm working as a content writer for an annual magazine. Focusing on businesses with a gentle sprinkling of politics. I guess I'm also waiting for an English dub of Tri, seeing as I still refuse to watch subbed anime. I drop into the IRC every now and then, but all too quickly, shit catches up. I wrote a novel at some point, but it was shitty. Looking at writing another one.

I had a couple of medium-term girlfriends, only one of whom tried to kill me, but I've been flying solo for the most part. I've got an interview at Rockstar International, though, so I guess it's looking like I can finally fulfil at least a couple childhood dreams. At least do some marketing for the new Red Dead game. That'd be cool.

do the London police know about your custom title? I don't want you to get arrested bruv.

When the time comes, I can make it happen.

Let's go for 201.8.

In other news, why do the best shows get canceled?

@celebi: But the links to my Photobucket uploads work fine. Does one have to make a new account to have their avatars be seen?

hotlinking (embedded) is different than a link

pretty much nothing on black friday is even actually on sale, especially electronics

a common scam is to sell cheaper model tvs as a "great deal" for example

anyway I've bought some books but that's it

Digimon Gaming / Re: Wonderswan Color

Do I own a Wonderswan color?
That's not important.  What matters is I have things for my dumb nerd shelves.  I wouldn't be surprised if these have emulated versions anyway if I really wanted to play.
they do, and they're not much fun to play so you are doing the right thing

Hey, guys,

I just noticed that some user avatars can no longer be seen. Why is that?

a lot of people hosted their avatars on photobucket, which abruptly cut off hotlinking unless you pay some ridiculous sum
